Introduction to Blackboard 9.1

Building a new structure yourself

Once you have placed the material from your old course into the new learning environment in Step 1, you will find a menu in this new learning environment which is similar to the one in the picture below. Above the line, you will see the original menu of the Faculty template. Below the line, you will find the “Tools” button and, underneath that, the course items that were transferred from the old learning environment in Step 1:

In the picture above, you can see that only “Course content’’ has been placed below the line. In general, any copied “Announcements’’ or “Course Information’’ is added ABOVE the line to the standard template menu items. However, this is not always the case if you have included menu items out of the 2012-2103 structure.

For example, in the picture below, you also see that”’Learning modules’’ and “Web links’’ items have been added below the line.

In short, the way that items in your 2012-2013 course are displayed after being copied to the new learning environment depends on how the course is structured.

We advise you to carefully check the contents/elements of the copy that has been made, so that you can find back all of your old information and integrate it properly into the new structure.

You will notice that some menu items now appear twice, such as – in this example – “Course content’’. Remove any double items from the menu above the line. You can do so by clicking on the arrow next to the item and then choose “delete”, as is shown here:

Once you have removed any double items, the menu will appear as follows:

Now, the Faculty template menu can be repaired by, in this case, moving “Course content” to its original place in the Faculty template. Dragging the menu items is done by keeping the arrow on the left of the menu item pushed in while moving upwards with the mouse. You will see that the relevant menu button moves up with the arrow. When you have moved the menu item to the right place, release the mouse button to fix the menu item in its place.

Once the menu items have been moved, the menu will look as follows:

Below the line, there may still be menu items which do not belong in the Faculty template, such as, in this example, the “Learning Modules” and “Web links” menu buttons.

The following part of this manual will explain how you can transfer the remaining content items from below the line to the standard structure in the correct way.
